This is purely a list of places and things to that have been
visited or suggested as suitable for groups or youth or children. It is always in
the process of being reorganised and populated with entries as and when they are
come across. The list is divided into two main sections:
- a list of general ideas and attractions that can be
found in most areas, and
- a section dealing with attractions specific to an area of the UK.
If you know of an attraction or place to visit, suitable for small or large groups of youth and children please let us know and we'll add it to the list... particularly any attractions that don't have a web presence. Any comments about it as well will be most welcome. Email us with your suggestion.

Adrenaline pumping fun…. Laser Quest, Megazone, Q-zar (Quasar), Dark Zone, etc are all based on the same idea and basic setup. Exploring darkened futuristic areas armed with laser rifles and packs you navigate the labyrinth of passages as red laser beams pierce through the dark and its up to you to get the opposition team before they get you!
The length of game depends on where you play and what type of game they are playing (some run special extended sessions. Expect total game time usually to be around 20-30 minutes, but you'll come out feeling that you've been in there for much longer! and players usually need a rest between games. Not everyone enjoys it, but if you've never done it take the opportunity to try it out. It is suitable for adults and children.
The best centres are those which have a fair amount of space and/or have well designed labyrinth. When planning for group visits ask about offers as games on an individual basis can be expensive and most centres offer special party packages (eg 2 or 3 games + refreshment for set price) or can be hired out on a corporate basis.
[NB. For those concerned about the use of lasers you'll find rifles only emit a low power visible 'sighting' red laser when the trigger is pressed. The actual sensors on the packs are sensitive to a very narrow invisible infra red beam that is emitted at the same time. In the arena there's no time when playing to be stupid and games are marshaled by staff.]

Because of the nature of the game 'paintball' is better suited to older children (12+) and some centres offer special junior events, but do ask around and see what your local centre has to offer as some centres are better (and safer) than others.
Paintball is a good team building exercise and not just for the boys... There are a large number of very good female players. The general game involves going around woodland or other areas armed with an air powered gun that fires paint pellets that burst on impact. Virtually all centres provide full protective gear, but its not unusual for players to end up with bruises if they get hit.
Paintball is usually organised as full day or half day events. A set amount of ammunition is provided within the price for each player, with the option to buy more. For full day events food may or may not be included in the price.

Challenge and fun for anybody! As well as outdoor centres there are a number of indoor centres around with climbing walls where you can practice and get experience of this challenging sport in a safe and well supervised environment.
10 Pin bowling centres are not as common in the UK as the US, but if you have one that's within easy traveling its worth considering as a trip for a group or making a day of it and including it as part of the day.
The Original London WalksPO Box 1708, London, NW6 4LWTel: 020 7624 3978 or 020 7794 1764 Fax: 020 7625 1932 Email: london@walks.com London Walks are excellent. Very informative and the best way to see the REAL London and hear about all the good and gory history behind not just the touristy bits! We have used them several times and never been disappointed. Themed walks using qualified Blue Badge guides, including special walks for children. They have a huge selection of walks which you can just turn up and join in with, but if you have a large group it's probably better to phone and organise a private group bookings which can also be tailored to suit your needs including children's tours for birthday parties or school trips covering national curriculum subjects. Too much information to list here, but click on the title above to visit their site online. |
